ADHD: Hyperactivity findings.

Here is an article on ADHD by Dr. Stephen Chaney on the drug side effects, and the causes of Hyperactivity....

Each year between 3 and 10% of school aged children
hare diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD), also known as hyperactivity.

Most of these children are currently being treated with
drugs.

And these drugs have side effects - ranging from
relatively minor (loss of appetite, weight loss,
insomnia and mood swings) to major (suicidal thoughts,
psychotic behavior and drug abuse).

So it is only natural for parents to ask whether there
is a more natural approach that they could follow and,
more specifically, whether diet could make a
difference.

To answer that question lets start by looking at just
one aspects of children's diets - the increasing
prevalence of artificial food colors and preservatives
in the diet.

The average child today is consuming over 10 pounds of
food additives every year!

The idea that food additives - specifically artificial
colors and preservatives - might be responsible for
hyperactivity was first raised by Dr. Ben Feingold over
30 years ago. He devised the Feingold Diet - a diet
that was free of artificial food colors, preservatives
and other artificial food additives.

Some small scale clinical studies suggested that the
diet might be successful and millions of parents used
the diet for their hyperactive children with great
success.

But the medical authorities pooh-poohed the Feingold
Diet. They pointed out that when parents are putting
their child on a special diet they are also giving that
child more attention - and it might be the parent's
increased attention that decreased the child's
hyperactive behavior.

They also pointed out when you eliminate food additives
from the diet you are decreasing the "junk" food and
increasing fresh fruits and vegetables - in short the
child's diet is much healthier.

So eventually the Feingold Diet lost popularity - but
the idea that artificial food colors & preservatives
might trigger hyperactivity has refused to go away.

In fact, a couple of recent studies have substantially
strengthened the link between artificial ingredients
and hyperactivity.

The first study was a meta-analysis of 15 previous
studies looking at the effect of artificial food colors
and preservatives on hyperactivity (Journal of
Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, 25: 423-434,
2004).

This meta-analysis concluded that artificial food
colors & preservatives caused an increase in
hyperactivity in 28% of the children tested.

Almost all of the children in those previous studies
were selected for the study because they had been
diagnosed as hyperactive (ADHD).

However, a more recent study looked at 297 children
from Southampton England who had not been diagnosed as
hyperactive (Lancet, 370: 1560-1567, 2007).

After an 8 week elimination phase in which artificial
food colors and preservatives were removed from their
diets, they were given a one week challenge consisting
of fruit juice containing one of two different mixtures
of four artificial food colors and the preservative
sodium benzoate or a placebo.

The amount of artificial food colors and sodium
benzoate
in the fruit juice drinks was designed to match the
average amount found in the English diet (which isn't
all that different from the American diet).

Once again, the results were clear. The amount of
artificial food colors and preservatives found in the
typical child's diet is enough to trigger hyperactivity
in many children.

So what does that mean to you if you have a hyperactive
child?

Could the simple act of eliminating artificial colors,
flavors & preservatives from your child's diet
eliminate hyperactivity and give you back that calm,
sweet child that you love?

The available data suggest that removing artificial
food additives from your child's diet can make a
difference in their behavior, but I tend to side with
experts who suggest that a holistic approach is best.

Eliminating food additives from your child's diet is
important, but also make sure the diet is a healthy
one, that your child is getting all of the nutrients
that they need and that they are getting all of the
attention and support that they need.

Inaccurate Lab Results

Posted On May 12, 2009 on Mercola.com after the article stating:
Quest Diagnostics (Laboratories) Pays $302 Million Fine

"I worked at Quest screening microscopically for cancer and related diseases as a cytologist and was pushed to screen more slides than was possible to do accurately. When I found a missed Pap smear case from the past after calling the current one on the same patient positive, I quit. All they cared about was how many slides I could get myself to screen each day, not whether or not I found cancer or precancerous changes on the slides. It was all about money. I was told if we didn't screen at least 75 slides a day the stock share holders would get mad and our department would not get a bonus. 60 was all I could do accurately. In Canada and other socialized medicine countries the max allowed by law is only 40-50 slides per day to ensure cancer screening is done accurately. I have found so many missed cases throughout the years in cytology I'd be a billionairre had the whistle blowing laws been in effect then. I helped get the law passed however and CLIA '88 as well.

I am waiting for Quest to get busted for missed Paps as the cytologists are working in sweat shop conditions being forced to daily screen the max allowed by US law (100 slides per day) which is not humanly possible to do with accuracy day in and day out. There isn't even time for a bathroom break at this speed.

Unfortunately, when profit is the main goal, ethics falter, and people suffer. A friend and I have noticed increasingly, that the work ethic in America in general is dysfunctional. Try to get a contractor to do a job right, for instance. The Government agencies 'protecting' the consumer are dysfunctional. They protect the business that ensures they get their paychecks and kickbacks. This morning I saw a little news on the telly, which was sadly comical. School children are being told to walk more to prevent or fix obesity, while the corporations are allowed to use their GMO-produced High Fructose Corn Syrup and Sulfites in the food, etc., to set these kids up. Milk, hot dogs, soda and Doritos, lots of bread, donuts, etc. are the standard fare. One school bought rubber balls for all the kids to sit on to replace the chairs, to burn more calories.
Lab tests that are inaccurate, after people are charged bloated prices to see a 'practitioner and get lab work so they can be put on pharmaceuticals has to be a tragicomedy. My retired friend realized that with his $500+ Kaiser insurance monthly bill and the dentist office, he is putting out about $1000 a month. In one hour, the dentist made $500, while working on other patients in other rooms. The sad thing there, is there's no non-toxic material to put in teeth, so we pay bloated prices to create immune drains.
Momma said there'd be days like this? What is the 'world' coming to? Better yet, what has America come to? When mothers give babies 10 times the amount of flame retardant chemicals in their breast milk than European Union countries with better laws, when we've allowed an invasion of the Pharma corps to drug up to 1/3 of the classroom, etc., what is our future? And I thought I needed to write a book about why we've ensured our society would fail with sexual abuse or one on the mistreatment of our elderly....

Personal Introduction of Blog Owner

Introduction of myself to a CafeMom website:
I wrote on Feb. 25, 2009 at 5:27 PM
Hello. I'm a Master's level Social Worker, endocervical cancer survivor, empty nester of seven children raised by myself, poet, gardener, interested in healthy cooking and good food in general, natural healing methods, and prevention through nutrition for optimal health. I started two blogs this year. www.ladyofthelake-vernonialake.blogspot.com sharing environmental concerns, pictures and personal stories and poetry of myself and the community members here, and
www.leangreencafe.blogspot.com which is a health and nutrition blog.

I have been in the remodeling/real estate investment/business, sold life and health insurance, worked in the Corrections system, facilitated Sexual Abuse Groups for Parents of Molested Children and Adults Molested as Children, facilitated anger management and Batterer Intervention groups, and been an eldercare giver for my father who passed in December at 86 years old. He was my closest friend.

My social work practice was named Cafe for the Soul. I ran a Women's Group, and a Life Transitions Group before learning of my cancer. I have gone from no prognosis to good health.
I worked for a School of Nursing as a Graduate Research Assistant, and love learning and sharing about health issues.
